As the Ethereum and Bitcoin communities gathered in Buenos Aires for Devconnect 2025, Fairgate kicked off the week with a packed event dedicated to exploring the future of computation and scalability on Bitcoin.

Hosted on November 16th, “BitVMX, Garbled Circuits and Fairgate's Evolving Ecosystem of Protocols” brought together a diverse lineup of researchers, protocol developers, and ecosystem leaders for an afternoon of deep technical discussion and visionary debate.

Exploring the Future of Computing on Bitcoin

The event's first session was led by Sergio Lerner, Fairgate's CTO, who delivered an updated overview of how BitVMX is connecting breakthrough primitives like garbled circuits, FLEX, and BATTLE to unlock new levels of scalability and capital efficiency. He also introduced the topic of Covenants, describing it as a first-time preview and noting that a new paper on the subject will be published in the coming months.

Sergio's presentation led the foundations for the Technical Panel, which featured Super Testnet, Liam Eagen, and Sergio himself. The discussion, moderated by Isabel Foxen Duke (Bitcoin Rails), centered around “The Future of Computing on Bitcoin,” diving into how offchain proofs, modular design, and cross-chain coordination can help Bitcoin evolve beyond simple scripting toward complex, verifiable computation.

The audience responded with enthusiasm, engaging in Q&A and sharing perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of building advanced protocols on Bitcoin’s robust underpinning.

Continuing the Conversation at the Whitepaper Reading Club

Fairgate’s involvement in Devconnect didn’t end there. On November 18th, Sergio Lerner and Martín Jonas joined the Whitepaper Reading Club, a community event hosted by Rootstock that aimed to unpack Bitcoin’s most transformative technical papers. This gathering focused on two landmark publications: The OG Rootstock Whitepaper (2015), which established Rootstock as the de facto DeFi Layer for Bitcoin, and The BitVMX Whitepaper (2024), Fairgate’s latest contribution to the evolution of scalable, programmable Bitcoin computation.

Sergio’s and Martín’s participation underscored Fairgate’s central role in advancing the research frontier of Bitcoin Layer 2 development. Their insights highlighted how Fairgate continues to bridge academic rigor, open research, and real-world impact across the Bitcoin ecosystem.

With LAbitConf, Devconnect, Fairgate’s side events, the joint activity with Rootstock and the Whitepaper Reading Club all converging in November, Fairgate’s presence in Buenos Aires reinforces that Bitcoin’s next frontier is being built, and it’s more open, modular, and collaborative than ever before.
